About the Instructors

Here is an insight to some of the people who will help achieve your goals.

Mr Herbert - Chief Instructor
Mr Richard Herbert began his martial arts training in 1981 at the age of 8. During the past 28 years he has studied numerous martial arts under some of the world’s best instructors.

So far Mr Herbert has gained a 3rd Dan in Tae Kwon Do and is currently working toward his 4th and 1st Dans in Judo, Kickboxing and Street Defence Systems.

He became a full time instructor in 2000 working for the country’s largest privately owned Martial Arts school and was responsible for setting up and managing over 10 separate locations.
Then in 2006 he parted company to set up Phoenix Martial Arts. During all of this time he has been dedicated to providing the best instruction in the most professional manner. He has surrounded himself with a team of fellow instructors whose teaching skill and passion are unrivalled.

Mr Buckland - Senior Instructor
Mr Gary Buckland is the Senior Instructor at Phoenix Martial Arts and has been training in the martial arts for over 9 years and teaching for nearly as long.

He began training as a hobby, something to do outside of school. Very quickly though he began to help out in his classes holding pads and eventually taking individuals or small groups.

 A stint of work experience showed Mr Buckland that this would be a job and way of life that he would like to pursue. Upon graduating 6th form, he became a full time instructor and started to run his own schools as well as working alongside the Chief Instructor. During his time Mr Buckland has attended many seminars on the martial arts and teaching styles. He has to date experience in 27 different martial arts, 35 weapon styles and is currently working towards his 4th Dan black belt.

Miss Magin - Assistant Instructor
Miss Rachel Magin is an instructor at Phoenix Martial Arts and has been training for over 4 years and has been teaching full time for several years.

She began her training as a hobby when she was 16, after about 6 months Miss Magin began to help out in class and started the process of becoming an instructor, by taking an assistant instructors course.

 After completing this and helping more and more in class, she began to take small groups of students and taking warm ups.
 
At 17 she attended a weeks’ worth of work experience and realised that this is what she wanted to do when she left school and started working full time.
During her time training and teaching she has attended various seminars on different Martial Arts. Miss Magin also has experienced various weapon styles and is currently working towards her 2nd Dan Black Belt.
